I’m really excited to share with you the one practice that helps me to process and release, emotional thoughts and feelings, that create chaos in me, and that’s journal writing.
But, before I get into the benefits of journal writing to de-stress, I just want to clarify for those of you who are not journalers that, journal writing is just the simple act of writing down your thoughts and feelings. There’s no mystery, there’s no right or wrong way, there is just your way. It’s a simple easy way of expressing yourself, and we all need that at one time or another.
Let’s face it, we all have our moments. We stress over work, over money, relationships, health issues, things happen and we sometimes can’t help it, we’re human.
It’s during those times when I find that reaching for my journal is the greatest self-care I can give myself. Writing out my thoughts onto the page gets them out of my head and my body, and helps me to gain clarity , calm and restore myself.
Here’s the important thing:
Journal writing doesn’t have to make sense, it doesn’t have to look pretty or have special pretty words. It doesn’t have to be grammatically correct, or be writing in a pretty and expensive journal. I like to use a regular one or three subject notebook, it’s where I feel the most free to write. What you’re doing is just taking your thoughts that are scrambling around inside your head and getting them out onto the page in whichever way they come to you, also known as a brain dump. And, it doesn’t matter which format you use. Make a list, mind map, write a paragraph, a sentence or a few pages, what matters is you get your thoughts out of your head and out of your body because, those thoughts are creating feelings that are creating stress.
Get your pen and paper and just start writing. If you find it difficult to just start writing, start with a question – How am I feeling? What is bothering me? And just keep writing, let the words come out, dump everything that’s inside your head onto the page. This is your place to rant and rave. Your journal is your free zone, your therapist, your best friend. But, bear in mind that a journal doesn’t replace a professional therapist when needed.
And this is really important, open up to yourself and be honest and truthful. Don’t edit your thoughts, it’s the only way you’ll get a clear vision of what’s going on. Before you start you may want to remind yourself that this is just for your eyes alone. You don’t have to show it to anyone or post it on social media unless you want to. You can also burn it (safely) shred it, toss it, or keep it, it’s all up to you.
When you’re done writing and feel complete, close your eyes for a moment, take a couple deep breaths and pay attention to how you feel. Do you feel less stressed? More calm? More clear about things?
So, this is your invitation to discover for yourself how journaling can be a powerful tool to process difficult emotions, help you to work through the thoughts that are creating stress, and help you to gain clarity and calm.
